Why Jains fast
Fasting can help quiet desire, deepen awareness, and support the shedding of karma. Jain teachers repeatedly caution that pride, anger, or display undermines its purpose. The inner discipline matters as much as the outward form.
Health, capacity, and guidance matter. Children, older people, and people with medical needs may observe through adapted forms of restraint.

Paryushana and Das Lakshana
Śvētāmbara communities generally observe an eight-day Paryushana, culminating in Samvatsari and requests for forgiveness. Digambara communities observe the ten-day Das Lakshana, reflecting on ten qualities of the soul.
Dates follow a lunar calendar and local programmes vary. Both periods renew commitments to study, restraint, and reconciliation.

Forms of fasting
A fast may involve one meal, avoiding selected foods, alternate-day patterns, or abstaining from food for a set period. More demanding observances should not be treated casually or used to measure another person’s devotion.
